Comparison of Male Genitalia Between Satyrium caryaevorus and Satyrium calanus (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Theclinae)

Version 2016.1 by Hugo Kons Jr.

Genitalia were dissected and images taken by Hugo L. Kons Jr. with the GT Vision imaging system at the former American Entomological Institute.  All structures are the natural three dimensional shape (not slide mounted).

Satyrium caryaevorus cannot be reliably separated from some specimens of Satyrium calanus by wing pattern, although both male and female genitalia are distinctive.  The most obvious difference in male genitalia is S. caryaevorus has inward projections off of the vinculum whereas S. calanus does not.
