Substrate: Sabal Palmetto, about 3 feet high, facing down

In the majority of nests located of Polistes dorsalis the females have the mesopleuron, metapleuron, and lateral side of the propodeum predominately black.  This nest is one such example.  However, a few intermediate specimens may occur with the mesopleuron and lateral propodeum mixed black and ferruginous, such as with voucher specimen HLKHYM:373 (below).
