Abstract:  We list 1036 species of Macrolepidoptera that we have recorded in our north Florida surveys since late August of 1996, 30 species of Macrolepidoptera for which we have examined specimens labeled from northern Florida, plus 41 species that we have recorded from northern Florida in the families Yponomeutidae, Attevidae, Urodidae, Cossidae, Lacturidae, Zygaenidae, Megalopygidae, Limacodidae, Epipyropidae, and Thyrididae.  We include three additional lists for Macrolepidoptera species reported from northern Florida in the literature: (1) 91 species of probable, possible, or unknown authenticity, (2) 129 species of doubtful authenticity, and (3) 25 species names which we consider to be synonyms of other species on our list.

Introduction:  The below check list is to a large extent the same list published in NAJLB Volume I (Kons and Borth, 2006), but with just the species names and without all of the detailed additional data and analyses presented in Volume I.  However, we are using this on-line list as a means of providing updates to the Kons and Borth (2006) list, including new species which we have added to our north Florida list, and any changes we have made in our understanding of species concepts.

Species listed below which were not included in the Kons and Borth (2006) check list are designated “[NEW ADDITION].”  These species were not necessarily collected subsequent to Kons and Borth (2006); we have added some species from HLK’s backlog material, and we have added some species we did not include in Kons and Borth (2006) because we were less certain of the determinations or taxonomy at that time.

There are a few cases where our species concepts have changed from those used in Kons and Borth (2006), and all changes for names applied at the species level from Kons and Borth (2006) are noted below.  We are in the process of testing species concepts for many quadrafine Noctuidae with the first 658 DNA base pairs of the COX1 mitochondrial gene.  We are submitting samples for sequencing to the University of Guelph, and testing species concepts with phylogenetic analyses conducted with TNT and PAUP.  To date our most extensive DNA data is for species in the genus Catocala, and there have been several surprising results with implications for species level taxonomy of some Florida Catocala species.

We do not always note changes made at the genus level, although there are some cases where different generic names are applied in the below updated list.  All species are referenced with their original Hodges et al. (1983) checklist number, excluding those species not included in this publication.

The main part of the list includes only species we have personally collected or examined specimens for from northern Florida.  We did not integrate in literature records for species for which we have not examined any Florida specimens as of yet, because we think there are many erroneous records reported from northern Florida in both Kimball (1965) and Heppner (2003).  We list the literature records separately at the end of this checklist in three sections.  The first includes literature records which we think are of probable or possible validity for northern Florida, and literature records for species we know too little about to know if north Florida records are reasonable.  The second section includes species we suspect are reported from northern Florida in error.  The third section includes names which we consider to be synonyms of names on our main list.

In the main list we distinguish between species we have personally collected on our north Florida surveys and those we have not encountered but for which we have examined specimens labeled from northern Florida.  The species we have encountered on our north Florida surveys appear in black font, whereas those we have not encountered appear in green font with “Examined” or some other annotation in [square brackets].  Some species were designated as literature records in Kons and Borth (2006), but we have subsequently collected these species or added records from our backlog material.  We use the following notations:

[L to C]  Reported as a literature record in Kons and Borth (2006), but this species has now been recorded from our north Florida surveys.

[L to E]   Reported as a literature record in Kons and Borth (2006), but we have subsequently examined one or more specimens labeled from northern FL.

[E to C]  Reported as a species for which we had examined FL specimens in Kons and Borth (2006), but we have subsequently added records from our north FL surveys.

Institutional Acronyms

FSCA: Florida State Collection of Arthropods

NMNH: National Museum of Natural History: Smithsonian Institution

A number of species occur in northern Florida which to the best of our knowledge are undescribed.  In some cases, two or more species are going under one name, and we do not know for which species the name should be correctly applied.  In these cases, after the specific epiphyte we designated these species as “complex species 1,” “complex species 2,” etc.  For some of the undescribed species, we have seen them separated in other collections or on other web sites, and the senior author concurs with these species concepts.  For others, the species concepts we use are those of the senior author.  In such cases, we annotate the species designation with “(as hypothesized by Kons).”

For the purposes of this check list, “northern Florida” includes the Florida panhandle and the northern portion of the peninsula south to the latitude of the Withlacoochee State Forest in Hernando County.  This area is not delimited biogeographically, but rather is an area with a limited range of climatic change in which we have a concentrated number of study sites (see below map).  The political unit of Florida would constitute a very poor unit of analysis for phenology or habitat data, because the climate and habitats in subtropical Florida are so markedly different from those in northern Florida.

Results:  To date we have recorded 1036 species of Macrolepidoptera among our north Florida surveys since late August of 1996.  We have recorded 41 species from northern Florida in the families Yponomeutidae, Attevidae, Urodidae, Cossidae, Lacturidae, Zygaenidae, Megalopygidae, Limacodidae, Epipyropidae, and Thyrididae.  We have examined specimens labeled from northern Florida for 30 Macrolepidoptera species we did not encounter on our north Florida surveys to date.  Literature records for north Florida include 91 additional Macrolepidoptera species that we consider to be of probable or possible occurence for northern Florida, or that we know too little about to judge if north Florida records are reasonable.  Another 129 Macrolepidoptera species are reported from northern Florida in the literature which are probably errors (in our judgment).  Twenty-five additional species names are reported which we consider to be synonyms of other species on our list.

Discussion:  We are still a ways from being able to produce a check list which we judge to approach a thorough representation of the Macrolepidoptera species which occur in northern Florida.  Our collecting over the last ten years has produced over 60 Macrolepidoptera species which to our knowledge had never been previously reported from Florida, and we have by no means covered the full range of habitats or geographic area of northern Florida throughout the season.  In addition, there are a large number of literature records we cannot verify.  These records range from species expected to occur in northern Florida to blatant errors, with plenty of records representing shades of grey between these extremes.  Finally, there are a number of genera or species groups occurring in northern Florida that are badly in need of revision.  However, in our judgment the current check list is useful for showing a large number Macrolepidoptera species that have been recorded from northern Florida with reliable collection data and authoritative determinations.

Images:  We are working on an On Line Guide to the Lepidoptera of Northern Florida which will illustrate the species on the below list.  For completed sections, a family or subfamily name in the below check list is highlighted blue with a hyperlink, or multiple hyperlinks appear after a subfamily if the guide includes multiple sections for that subfamily.  Some scattered images are also available for some species in the various sections of our web page on the Lepidoptera Habitats of Northern Florida.  For some species not yet covered in completed sections of the on line guide, a link is provided to a page in the Lepidoptera Habitats of Northern Florida where the species is illustrated.

Help us update and improve this list:  We would welcome additional records for species in the included families for northern Florida, or the opportunity to verify records reported in the literature for which we have not yet seen any specimens.  In order to add a species to the list, the senior author will need to see a voucher specimen or a high quality image of a voucher specimen.  We would very much welcome donations of such specimens or images, or alternatively Lepidopterists are welcome to visit the senior author in Gainesville where he can take high quality images of specimens at the American Entomological Institute.  Those who contribute additional records will be listed in the acknowledgments, and the collector will be designated for new species we add to the list.  Please note that the North American Lepidoptera Biodiversity LLC only accepts distributional records supported by voucher specimens, in order to promote accuracy and verifiability of information reported in our journal and on line publications.  If you can help, please contact the senior author at hkonsjr@yahoo.com.

NOTE: Cara and carissima were treated as synonyms in Vol. I, but our molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests they are separate species.  All of the Florida specimens we have sequenced thus far are carissima, but we have some Florida material that we have not yet had sequenced that is a good match to the cara phenotype.  Possible cara specimens have been recorded from SW 20th Ave. and the A.E.I., while carissima is recorded from all of the localities and flight season intervals reported for cara in NAJLB Vol. I.

8849    Catocala andromedae

8851    Catocala coccinata

            Catocala sinuosa Grote

Note:  We have recently conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis providing unequivocal evidence that Catocala sinuosa is a valid species rather than a synonym of C. coccinata, as had previously been believed.  C. sinuosa is recorded from all of the localities and flight season intervals reported for coccinata in Kons and Borth (2006).  C. coccinata is recorded from 11 and 15 May from three specimens from the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Liberty County.  Both species occur in sympatry at this site.

8855    Catocala miranda

8856    Catocala orba

8857    Catocala ultronia

8858    Catocala sp. nr. crataegi

Note:  This species was reported as crataegi in Kons and Borth (2006).  However, our molecular evidence suggests there are three species going under this name; the one that occurs in Florida is not the true crataegi.

8858.1 Catocala pretiosa

8860    Catocala lincolnana

8863    Catocala mira

8864    Catocala grynea

8864    Catocala sp. nr. grynea

Note:  Our molecular data suggests there are two species going under the name grynea that occur in sympatry in both Florida and Wisconsin.  They cannot be separated from external features to our knowledge.

            Catocala charlottae Brou

Note:  We have recently conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis providing unequivocal evidence that C. charlottae and WI C. praeclara phenotypes are separate species, and while closely related, they are not sister species.  Both names have been reported from Florida for the same species; C. charlottae is a correct name for the species that occurs at low elevations in the Gulf States.  While C. charlottae material from Florida and Louisiana differs in pattern from northern C. praeclara, we recently had some material sequenced from the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky which resembles northern praeclara in pattern but matches FL/LA charlottae in COI sequences.  Unfortunately, north of the southeast coastal plain the two species may be hard to tell apart from external features.  This creates a nomenclatural dilemma with respect to the name praeclara.  The holotype of C. praeclara is from New York.  If it was from low elevations near the coast it could be the same species that occurs on the southeast coastal plain plus at least as far north as the Cumberland Mountains; this would mean charlottae is a synonym of praeclara and praeclara is not the correct name for the species that occurs in Wisconsin.  If it was from the interior of the state it is probably the same as the species we had sequenced from Wisconsin.

8869    Catocala alabamae

8872    Catocala clintoni

8873    Catocala similis

8874    Catocala minuta

8875    Catocala grisatra

8876    Catocala micronympha

8877    Catocala connubialis

8878    Catocala amica sp. 1

8878    Catocala amica sp. 2

Note:  There are possibly two species going under the name amica in Florida.  “Amica species 2” is a highly variable species recorded from all of the localities and flight intervals reported for amica in Kons and Borth (2006).  “Amica species 1” is a much less variable species that is widespread in much of eastern North America, but in Florida we have only found a few specimens in the central panhandle.

Catocala lineella complex species 1                       (as hypothesized by Kons)

Catocala lineella complex species 2                       (as hypothesized by Kons)

Catocala lineella complex species 3                       (as hypothesized by Kons)

Note:  Our molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates there are multiple species going under the name lineella.  The most common species in FL, C. lineella complex species 1, is recorded from all of the localities and flight season intervals reported for C. lineella in Kons and Borth (2006).  This species is diagnosable from wing pattern and has multiple correlating molecular characters unique to the amica/lineella/jair complex.  It is not clear if there are one or two additional lineella species.  C. lineella species 2 is widespread throughout eastern North America and in northern Florida, but it is usually much less common than lineella species 1 in Florida and Texas.  C. lineella species 3 may or may not be separate from species 2 (there are minor molecular differences), and if it is different some specimens may not be distinguishable from lineella species 2 from pattern.  This “species” occurs in the Gulf States in sympatry with lineella species 1 and species 2, but is the least common of the lineella complex species.  Catocala lineella complex species 4” was included on previous versions of this checklist but we have deleted it.  There is a rare phenotype for which the first specimen we had sequenced had a unique COI barcode from all other specimens in the amica/lineella/jair complex.  However, this was an incomplete sequence and the results appear to have been annomalus.  Additional specimens closely resembling this phenotype have sequences that match amica species 2.

8879    Catocala jair

Note:  Molecular data suggests there are probably two species of C. jair, that occur in sympatry in both Florida and Texas.  There are no external morphological differences corresponding to the molecular differences, but we have not yet studied the genitalia.

NOTE:  Subsequent to NAJLB Vol. I HLK has decided records reported under “pallida” represent two distinct species.  Crambidia near pallida has been recorded from all of the localities and times of year reported for pallida in Vol. I.  Crambidia pallida has been recorded from the panhandle localities of Aspalaga Road, A.N.F. Road 111, Hickory Branch, Revell Branch, and the Blackwater River site.  Series of both species have been collected in sympatry with no intermediates in Liberty County.  There may also be a third “pallida” species in the Appalachians (see James Adams’ web site)

8298    Dasychira meridionalis

Dasychira species                            [NEW ADDITION: The name pallerosa may apply, or perhaps this is a new species]

Note:  The preceding three species are sympatric in Santa Rosa County and have markedly different COI sequences.  We had previously considered it likely that  meridionalis and basiflava might all be one species, but our recent molecular evidence strongly argues against this hypothesis, although at this point we probably cannot reliably separate all specimens from morphology.  Thus far we have meridionalis sequences from Alachua and Santa Rosa Counties (n=2), basiflava sequences from Santa Rosa County (n=2), and one sequence of a third species from Santa Rosa County.  The third species, for which we have only one FL specimen, most closely resembles the pallerosa phenotype in Ferguson's (1978) fascicle.

Note:  Kons has changed his species concepts for Euagrotis subsequent to Kons and Borth (2006).  Records reported as "species near lubricans" are now designated as "lubricans complex species 1" but all of these records refer to what Kons still considers to be one species.  Records reported as "species near illapsa" in Kons and Borth (2006) included what Kons now considers to be two species.  "Euagrotis lubricans complex species 2" is recorded from all of the localities and flight season intervals reported for "species near illapsa" in Kons and Borth (2006), whereas "species near illapsa" is recorded from these same flight intervals but only the peninsular Florida localities.  Lafontaine (2003) considered what Kons calls lubricans complex species 1 and species 2 to be one species, but Kons cannot agree because there are consistent pattern differences corresponding to habitat differences and the ranges overlap with no intermediate specimens.   Where scrub habitats and wetlands occur in close proximity in Liberty County the two species may be collected together, but at many localities only one or the other occurs.  Kons does not know which of these species matches the lubricans holotype.  Lafontaine (2003) considered what Kons calls "species near illapsa" to be a form of illapsa, but Kons cannot agree due to the marked pattern differences corresponding to habitat differences.  Again, the ranges of illapsa and near illapsa overlap, but Kons has seen no intermediates.  Euagrotis sullivani Lafontaine closely resembles Euagrotis lubricans complex species 1, but so far none of the FL specimens Kons has dissected are sullivani.  We have recorded E. sullivani from Angelina County, Texas, and it may show up in Florida eventually.

Literature Records of Probable, Possible, or Unknown Authenticity for Northern Florida

The following species, reported in the literature from northern Florida, are species which we think are probable or possible for occurring in northern Florida, or species we know too little about to hypothesize if north Florida records are reasonable.  A discussion of these species is included in Table 3 in NAJLB Volume 1.   The literature records come primarily from Kimball (1965) and Heppner (2003), and the references cited in these publications.  Some additional literature records subsequent to Heppner (2003) are from Lafontaine (2004).

Species names in violet were reported from northern FL in recent revisions (Lafontaine (1987), Poole (1995), or Lafontaine (2004)) and thus the determinations are known to be highly authoritative.

Literature Records for Northern Florida of Doubtful Authenticity

The following species are in our judgment likely reported from northern Florida in error, due to either misdeterminations or incorrect label data on correctly determined specimens.  A discussion of why we doubt these records is provided in Table 3 in NAJLB Volume I.  A source of many dubious records in Kimball (1965) (and presumably a second reporting of many of these species in Heppner (2003), although Heppner did not give sources of records like Kimball did) is a collector who collected both in Cassadaga, Florida and New York.  We suspect a number of the Cassadaga records are much more likely to be from New York than Florida.  Some other Cassadaga records are likely to be of material from southern Florida, and there are even some Cassadaga reports of western species that probably do not range east of central Texas (Schinia roseitincta is an example).  Ferguson (1978) previously questioned whether some material labeled from this locality was correctly labeled.  We consider species reported from northern Florida soley based on Cassadaga records to be doubtful at best, even if the specimens are correctly identified.
